what would you do with it?

I love a little settee.  They stop me in my tracks every time.  I came across this french empire settee and chair about a month ago at an estate sale.  The little old lady running the sale saw me looking at it too long and said, "make me an offer", so I made a crazy low ball offer - actually hoping she would decline, because I surely didn't need this stuff.   However, she hesitated a bit, and said, sure, if you will get it out of here today.  I was shocked. And should have said, "just kidding"!!!  But, couldn't pass up the deal.   So, here I am with these two fine pieces of furniture, that I certainly don't need or really know what to do with.

I thought I might sell it, but the settee is just so cute.  I am torn like an old sweater.

The gold velvet upholstery is not very old, and actually not bad with my decor.  I'm a little gold around here.  But this stuff is a little too formal looking for me in its gold state, and wood stain finish.

The frame on both pieces may have been refinished in the last 10 years or so, cause it is in excellent condition.  So, I am struggling with the idea of painting it.  It is a good sitter.  I could use it for seating from time to time.

Could you see it painted turquoise?  Or Annie Sloan's "florence"?  Or Old White?  I have a teal pillow that looks great with the gold velvet.

Help me out here.  What would you do with this stuff?

Linking up to Between Naps on the Porch Metamorphosis Monday!

  1. You gonna kill me for this comment but I would paint the wood hot pink and put a shellac (in gold flakes) on top this will dull down the hot pink and antique it a bit too.

pink and ochre are so hip!

    found you from MM.
    Cheers

  2. I can't wait to go with you to these estate sales! you know this right? I can totally see me hiding away in your back seat and then popping my head up once you are well on your way. SURPRISE! Okay, anyways... how about reupholstering in some really bright funky fabric like the sofas on anthropologie and leaving the wood as is?

    1. Carolyn, you better not be teasing me about going!!! And the house next door is still for sale. It really is all the yard you need, promise :-)

I love those anthropologie funky brights. I think I have a picture of one of their chairs, and I do have an old quilt that I bought for $1.00 at a yard sale that might be fun, and enough. Hurry here!

  3. I would totally paint the frame! Something that looks lacquered, and in a bold colour.
    So much potential!

  4. These pieces are beautiful! I don't think I would paint them, although I do paint a lot of stuff that people think I shouldn't. How about some while slips with ruffles and ties?

    1. Slips with ruffles is one of my favorite looks. I must get my sewing machine serviced! Something's wrong and I loose my religion every time I use it.

  5. I would paint them black or dark gray and recover the seats with a black and white houndstooth. I like the idea of the soft scroll arms with a crisp menswear fabric.

    1. I see what you mean. I think they have a masculine look to them. Thanks for the suggestion.
